AIER Eye Hospital group officially approved the establishment of AIER Glaucoma Institute on December 4, 2018 and the institute was established on April 21, 2019.
By coordinating with the resources and platforms of AIER Eye Hospital Group, it intends to build a glaucoma institute which integrate service, education and research. Focusing on the key clinical issues of glaucoma, the institute will carry out high-quality research on glaucoma and optic nerve related diseases from the aspects of basis, clinic, translation and multi-central clinical research, striving to develop research achievements with independent property rights.
There are more than 30 AIER's hospitals have an independent glaucoma department and 261 AIER’s hospitals have launched glaucoma programs, in which annual glaucoma surgeries reached 12,000 and the number of glaucoma patients is up to 200,000 anually. In recent years, it has published more than 20 SCI papers, awarded 2 National Natural Science Foundation projects, nearly 10 provincial-level projects, and obtained 2 national patents.
The key research areas of the institute:
Development of Transscleral Continuous Drug Delivery System;
Cataract combined with minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (KDB, trabecome) in the treatment of angle closure glaucoma;
Immunologic approach to the protective treatment of optic nerve;
Anti-scarring after filtrating operation.
Biomechanical changes and finite element modeling of sclera under high intraocular pressure;
Optic nerve image and blood flow analysis of high myopia with glaucoma.
