To further implement the call of premier Li Keqiang’s "The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation(LMC) Mechanism", deepen pragmatic cooperation between China and ASEAN countries, China Charity Alliance (CCA) and the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA) jointly China Foundation for Disabled Persons (CFDP), Overseas Chinese Charity Foundation of China (OCCFC), Beijing Qiankun Hengda Health Poverty Alleviation Foundation and other charitable organizations, as well as AIER Eye Hospital Group and other eye care institutions jointly initiated "Mekong Brightness Action", a transnational public welfare medical project.
AIER Eye Hospital Group is the designated ophthalmic medical institution invited to undertake this project. "Assigning this International medical aid project with such responsibility and honor to AIER means our medical competency and social responsibility have gained wide recognition by government and NGOs", said Mr. Bang Chen, Chairman of AIER Eye Hospital Group. He also guaranteed that the hospital will uphold the spirit of responsibility, collaboration, innovation and dedication, and dispatch a highly professional medical team to ensure the mission is accomplished, and carry forward the power of China with excellent medical capability.
To effectively complete the mission, AIER formed three medical teams to take charge of international medical operation tasks in Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam respectively, of which the specialists were selected from AIER hospital of Zhengzhou, Kunming and Chongqing. As the first oversea charitable medical aid project of China, thousands of patients received treatment and eyecare management, including 400 cases of cataract surgeries and nearly 500 glasses provided. AIER also provided medical guidance for local hospitals, to improve the national ophthalmology medical technology in Laos and Myanmar.
With excellent medical technology, good surgical and quality medical services, AIER’s team received highly praise from the local people and government of Laos and Myanmar. Mr. Hong liang, the ambassador of the Chinese embassy in Myanmar, said that the Mekong Brightness Action project was a window for the cataract patients in Myanmar and help them rebuild the bridges with the world. He believes that the project will promote friendly cooperation between China and Myanmar. "Thanks for the Chinese foreign ministry, China charity federation and other institutions for bringing light to cataract patients in Myanmar," said Myanmar’s health minister. "the Mekong Brightness Action project is a gift sent to the eye disease patients who lives in Mekong region countries, it brought light to the Laos cataract patients", said by Laos national deputy health minister, he also said that the project further strengthens the friendly strategic partnership between the two countries.
The Mekong Brightness Action project is widely recognized by the Chinese and foreign communities. The project will continue to be carried out in the sub-region of Mekong countries. In 2017, the project will focus on the eye health of young people, aiming to serve the healthy growth of local adolescents through the project. Through the power of social charity, combined with the international top scientific research techniques and experience of AIER Institute of Optometry & Visual Science, to take visual health screening for local young people and provide free glasses for poor myopia students. Meanwhile, adolescents’ eye health status were well documented to further improve the juvenile myopia Prevention and control locally.
