AIER Opens Up A New Era of Personalizing Myopia Prevent and Control

International Conference on Optometry and Vision Science was held at Changsha in Nov.18.  AIER School of Ophthalmology•CSU collaborated with Optometry Group of Chinese Ophthalmological Society in publishing the Big Data Report On Chinese Teenagers’ Myopia-Related Visual Behaviors. 20% myopia patients are at risk of developing high myopia. Severe high myopia may result in blindness.

NHFPC(National Health and Family Planning Commission of China) issued the “13th Five-Year Plan” National Eye Health Planning(2016-2020) in 2016. National Health Commission issued the “Guidelines for Myopia Prevention, Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Strabismus and Amblyopia” in June 2018. The Ministry of Education, NHFPC and other 8 government agencies jointly issued Implantation Plan to Systematically Prevent and Control  Juvenile Myopia in Aug. 30, 2018, first included juveniles’ myopia rate as one of the government assessment standards, pointed out that the juvenile myopia prevention and control requires for the joint efforts of government, schools, medical institutions, families and students, we shall stand together to safeguard our children’s eyes. 


To tackle with the growing threat of juvenile myopia, a great amount of efforts has been put in by the government to the prevent and control juvenile myopia. Professor Zhikuan Yang, the vice leader of Optometry Group of Chinese Ophthalmological Society, PhD supervisor of AIER School of Ophthalmology, Central South University, introduced that the number of Chinese myopia patients has reached 600 million. Pupils(aged 7~12), junior school students(aged 13~15), high school students(aged 16~18) and college students(aged 19~20) have a vision defect rate of 45.70%, 74.40%, 83.30% and 87.70%. As a nation with the highest juvenile myopia rates, China is now facing serious challenges.    


180 million records of myopia-related behaviors provide scientific guidelines for myopia prevention and control.

AIER Eye Hospital Group has carried out the diversity research of teenagers’ myopia-related behaviors in 2016. The publish of “Big Data Report” owes to the “Cloud-clip” developed by AIER School of Ophthalmology, Central South University, which obtained 180 million records of myopia-related behaviors from 22911 school-age children and teenagers(aged 6~17). Professor Zhikuan Yang said, “By analyzing the  enormous amount of data, we found out how juvenile myopia is related to those behaviors and the regional differences. The conclusions would help us finalizing a scientific plan to prevent and control juvenile myopia from 5 dimensions - Viewing Distance, Viewing Duration, Outdoor Time, Viewing Angle, Reading Light.”
