International Retina Summit Forum 2019 Grandly opened, AIER Released the Big Data Report on Fundus Disease in Chinease Population

On November 9, the 9th International Retina Summit Forum and the Nansha Eye Genetics Symposium was held in Nansha, Guangzhou. The conference was co-sponsored by AIER School of Ophthalmology · CSU and AIER Eye Hospital Group. Authoritative experts and scholars, who are famous in the field of Vitreous, retinal, optic nerve, ocular hereditary diseases, from North America, Europe, Southeast Asia and China gathered together to discuss new clinical diagnosis and treatment technologies and cutting-edge research results of retinal and ocular genetic diseases.

Retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, etc., have always been the main diseases that impair the health of human eyes. In the prevalence of globalization, diagnosis and treatment technologies for fundus need to keep pace with the rapid development of science and technology. Hence, close cooperation and communication with leading experts in the world is needed. The International Retina Summit Forum is a large, high-end, international platform that promotes and accelerates the exchange of scientific research and prevention technologies around the world.


Global experts gather together, contribute to a bright future

The International Retina Summit is held every two years and has been successfully held for eight times so far. Its influence and appeal are growing, and it has become one of the top events for retinal science internationally. In order to further expand the influence of the forum, the conference also innovatively implemented the "1+4" model: one main venue (Guangzhou) + four regional venues (Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Urumqi). There are nearly a thousand experts and scholars in the ophthalmology industry, and more than one hundred speeches.

Spotlighting Fundus, Exploring new remedy

It is reported that there are more than 100 well-known Chinese and foreign experts in the five conferences to share academic speeches and case. The speeches cover not only fundus diseases and ocular hereditary diseases, such as pathological myopia, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, optic nerve defects, choroidal disease, macular hole, glaucoma, intraocular lymphoma and retinitis pigmentosa, but also include the application and research of stem cell therapy, minimally invasive vitrectomy, anti-VEGF drug therapy and artificial intelligence in the treatment of fundus diseases, focusing on today's cutting-edge developments and news in the field of retinal disease research in the world.


AIER released "Big Data Report on Fundus Disease in Chinese Population by AIER Eye Hospital Group" during the forum. Relying on the Leyecloud intelligent scanning and reading system invented by AIER, the research team examined 68,878 individuals' fundus via AI & remote reading in a year. This report shows that the number of people with fundus lesions is 12,620, and the rate of lesions is 18.32%. "The innovative service mode of AI + remote reading relieved the problem that the lack of ophthalmologist in remote area and communities. Combining AIER's medical strength of 400 hospitals in china mainland, this model will remedy the capacity of basic medical service for eye health in China, and effectively improve the eye health awareness of Chinese people.Besides, the data shows that fundus lesions becomes the primary factor of elderly blindness and male tends to ignore fundus lesions than female." Prof. Tang Shibo said.

At the same time, the "A Perspective Study on the Myopic Foveoschisis based on different surgical methods in real world" was launched in Shanghai. The project was initiated by Shanghai AIER Eye Hospital, and more than 40 ophthalmic medical institutions across the country participated in the study, aiming to develop a better treatment plan for Myopic Foveoschisis and benefit the majority of patients with high myopia.
