AIER Optometry Institute and Singapore Eye Institute - a world-renowned eye institution, officially launched the "Adult High Myopia Cohort Study Project."

Currently, the incidence of myopia among adolescents in China ranks first in the world. With the increasing number of people with myopia and high myopia, the resulting number of pathological myopias causing blindness is also increasing, and pathological myopia has become one of the major causes of visual impairment and blindness worldwide. On the afternoon of May 7th, AIER Optometry Institute and Singapore Eye Institute (referred to as SERI), a world-renowned eye institution, officially launched the "Adult High Myopia Cohort Study Project". It is expected that in the next 5-10 years, the two sides will jointly tackle the problem of risk factors and pathogenesis of pathological myopia, so as to provide solutions to the difficulty of preventing high myopia from developing into pathological myopia, ultimately achieve the goal of reducing the blindness rate of high myopia.

It is reported that the project focuses on the field of myopia technological highland in high myopia and pathological myopia, it is expected to find ways to prevent, screen and treat high levels of myopia worldwide, with more innovative approaches. In addition, three normative guidelines on the prevention, screening, clinical diagnosis and treatment of pathological myopia are established, which is anticipated to fill the gap in the field of pathogenesis of human pathological myopia, to provide technical guidance and codes of practice for the prevention and treatment of pathological myopia for ophthalmologists around the world.

We learned that this is the first scientific collaborative project between AIER Optometry Institute and SERI.

Prof.Aung Tin, Director of the SERI, Prof. Ecosse Lamoureux, Director of Department of Population Health and Epidemiology, Prof.Saw Seang Mei, Head of Myopia Research Unit, Dr. Wong Chee Wai, the Principal Investigator of the Clinical Study Project, Prof. Zhikuan Yang, Director of AIER Optometry Institute & Visual Science, Prof. Weizhong Lan, Deputy Director of AIER Optometry Institute & Visual Science, Prof. Zhongping Chen, Director of Fundus Disease Department of Changsha AIER Eye Hospital, Dr.Xiaonin Li, Director of the Department of Optometry, Changsha AIER Eye Hospital, attended the launch meeting.

The incidence of high myopia in China has reached 4 percent.

Pathological myopia is the main cause of visual impairment and blindness.

The SERI is recognized as a global pioneer in quality eye research, has deeply participated in the development and progress of human ophthalmology. Speaking of AIER, as a global ophthalmic medical group, in terms of abundant clinical resources, AIER has also bridged all three areas of medicine, education, and research, it significantly boosted the industry development and improvement. As early as 2018,, AIER with National Eye Institute of Singapore (referred to as SNEC) & SERI signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation agreement, which outlined the two sides decided to cooperate in academic research, personnel training and technology transformation. For this purpose, to create an "industry-university-research" highland for ophthalmic medical care has been paid close attention.

As their first collaborative project, the “Adult High Myopia Cohort Study Project “focuses on an emerging public health problem -- pathological myopia.

In recent years, myopia has become a health problem worldwide, especially in Asia. Take China as an example, according to a research report released by the World Health Organization in 2018, there are 600 million myopia patients in China, and the myopia rate among teenagers continues to rank first in the world. What should be more important is that the number of myopias in China is increasing rapidly, with the incidence rate of high myopia reaching 4 percent. As the number of people with high myopia grows, the number of people with pathological myopia causing blindness is also on the rise, posing a serious threat to the nation's vision and visual health. Different with simple myopia, the myopia degree of pathological myopia often does not stabilize with age, this cause myopia to increase later in life. Moreover, pathological myopia which often accompanied with other eye diseases, be like Glaucoma, Cataract, Maculopathy, Retinal Detachment. It's been reported that pathological myopia is one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness, both in Asia and globally.

The project plans to recruit 1,000 patients with high myopia to participate in the research.

It is understood that the project will be led by Prof. Zhikuan Yang, Prof. Saw Seangmei, with Prof. Weizhong Lan and Dr. Wong Chee Wai as the project leaders, plans to recruit 1000 high myopia patients over the age of 40 with minimum requirement 500 diopters. Reexaminations will conduct every 12 months during the 5–10-year research period, to evaluate the incidence and risk factors of pathological myopia and the peripheral retinopathy in patients with pathological myopia, as well as explore the impact of daily diet on pathological myopia, and the impact of pathological myopia on the quality of life, with depression and social interaction. At the same time, the research team will use advanced fundus imaging technology to effectively assess and document the complications associated with pathological myopia. To better predict the threatening progress of myopia and explore the pathogenesis of pathological myopia complications, so as to provide solving ideas to the development of high myopia into pathological myopia, team can finally achieve the goal of reducing the blindness rate of high myopia.

Prof Aung Tin, Director of the SERI, expressed great pleasure for this project. He said that since the strategic cooperation with AIER has been signed, both sides have been looking for cooperation opportunities. Through this research project, he hopes it will provide the beneficial help on the recognition and treatment of high myopia.

Establish a whole chain of myopia research system with a comprehensive life-cycle myopia prevention and control system.

It is reported that in May 2018, led by AIER School of Ophthalmology CSU, the artificial intelligence product "Cloud Clip" independently developed by AIER as the key experimental equipment, with the world's first myopia big data multi-center research program was officially launched. The project, which based on the research of visual behavior, visual environment and other factors between different regions and races, to ensure the relationship between these factors and individual's myopia development.

“Myopia, particularly high myopia does great damage to eye health. We have always exacted but three points in the prevention and control of myopia, First, prevention had to be given more prominence, reduce the overall rate of incidence of myopia; The second, monitor the myopia progress, prevent the occurrence of high myopia; Third, If you have high myopic problem, try to prevent blinding complications.”Prof Zhikuan Yang emphasized “Based on the three points, we have carried out the world's first myopia big data multi-center research program to study the pathogenesis of myopia, as well as the “Adult High Myopia Cohort Project” to study the pathogenesis of pathological myopia. From wide group of myopia research to blind pathological myopia research, we hope work together with scientific research team at home or from overseas in terms of whole chain myopia pathogenesis research systems and solutions, which sets up a comprehensive system for the prevention and control of myopia throughout the human life cycle. Where possible, try to avoid growing blind from myopia at all. A bright future is awaiting China, and the world!
