AIER Eye Hospital Group, Global leader in eye care services, joints global technology giant INTEL to create artificial intelligence eye disease identification solutions, making high-tech achievements readily available to the general public.

Recently, the AIER R & D team has successfully developed an Ophthalmic Intelligent Diagnostic System which uses the international mainstream neural network algorithm - Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), making use of the large clinical data resources accumulated by AIER. With deep study of nearly 10 million Chinese people's fundus images, the team constructed an intelligent software model of the diagnosis of fundus diseases. The diagnostic accuracy of the system for eye disease with a large patient base such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has reached more than 90%, which is 80% higher than any other similar diagnosis system worldwide.

Based on AIER’s existing artificial intelligence recognition system, combined with ophthalmic image analysis and processing features, INTEL will provide customized hardware solutions to large scale ophthalmic image analysis and greatly increase the accuracy and efficiency of DR and AMD diagnosis. It will be expanded to glaucoma and other eye diseases in the future. Utilizing artificial intelligence in clinical applications in eye disease diagnosis will provide the public with more convenient and more efficient eye care services.

Prof. Shi-bo Tang, dean of AIER College of Ophthalmology, CSU said:” Diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma are very serious blinding eye disease, but if founded in time in early screening by using artificial intelligence and treat as soon as possible, the risk of blindness can be reduced significantly. In addition, AI eye disease identification solutions will effectively solve the problem of professional doctor scarcity, primary hospital medical resources and skills shortage, and time-consuming images analysis, and will greatly improve the efficiency of clinical diagnosis. On the other hand, it also plays an important role in balancing domestic medical resources, expands the screening coverage at primary ophthalmic clinics”. He also said that once the model is mature, it will change the traditional ophthalmological diagnosis and treatment model, thus can provide more convenient and efficient medical services to the public.

Mr. Bang Chen, the chairman of AIER Eye Hospital Group said: "The combination of AI and ophthalmic medical care, not only meet the needs of patients, but also actively respond to the technology strategy of " the new generation of artificial intelligence development planning " that issued by the state council recently, and is also the potential advantage in ophthalmic industry for AIER to take the lead globally.

The cooperation between INTEL and AIER will give full play to INTEL's technological advantages from "cloud" to "end", further promote the innovation and practice in the field of ophthalmology, and continue to promote the popularization and application of advanced technology that will benefit more patients.
