The World Health Organization (referred to as WHO) and the International Telecommunication Union (referred to as ITU) held the launch meeting“ Be he@lthy, be mobile: a toolkit on how to implement MyopiaEd ” in Geneva, Switzerland, at 7:00 PM On March 15, Beijing time. The MyopoaEd toolkit aims to improve awareness and health literacy of the importance of regular eye examinations and spectacle compliance among children and adults with myopia. Prof. Weizhong Lan from AIER Eye Hospital Group (referred to as “AIER”)  attended the meeting online.

Dr Stuart Keel, Technical Officer, Vision and Eye Care Programme, WHO introduced the WHO together with the ITU have developed "A toolkit on how to implement MyopiaEd”. This toolkit includes evidence-based message libraries for key population groups, along with operational guidance and resources for adapting, implementing and monitoring the MyopiaEd programme. The toolkit is intended to assist policy- and decision-makers and implementers to establish a national or large-scale MyopiaEd programme.


 

The moderator of the launch meeting was Dr Alarcos Cieza, Unit Head Sensory Functions, Disability and Rehabilitation, WHO. Dr Bente Mikkelsen, Director Noncommunicable Diseases Department, WHO made a closing “It is the intention that the myopia toolkit launch today will provide the basis for countries and other implementing partners to develop sustainable and acceptable activities to support educational myopia and it's prevention.”



 

Mr. Weizhong Lan, a member of the Refractive Error Prevention and Control Program, WHO, and a Professor of AIER School of Ophthalmology, Central South University said “AIER's scale and technical edge are handy when we talking about experience in myopia prevention and control without a lots of research, the toolkit brings together advanced experience from institutions such as AIER and elsewhere. It is believed that these experiences will be passed on to more than 200 countries around the world, we will participate in international cooperation and work for further progress in the global develop myopia prevention and control.”

The SPECS Initiative ：A new global target was endorsed - namely a 40 per cent increase in effective coverage of refractive error by 2030

 


 

According to WHO estimates, myopia is the most common refractive error globally, affecting an estimated 2.6 billion people, with more than 600 million of them are in China. The latest data released by the Ministry of Education at a press conference in 2021, the general myopic rate of China’s children and teenagers is 52.7%. In 2022, the WHO Vision Programme will launch the SPECS Initiative to support countries to increase spectacle coverage while delivering quality care. To improve awareness and general education on myopia: the causes, warning signs and misconceptions，a new global target was endorsed - namely a 40 per cent increase in effective coverage of refractive error by 2030.


 

AIER is the only medical institution from China invited to the meeting that has been focusing on myopia prevention and control. In recent years, AIER make full use of the internet, big data and other technologies to create a new model of "SaaS platform (software service platform) + intelligent ophthalmic medical equipment" and enjoy a certain degree of synergy. The system relies on a data analysis model, by using this model, it provides data and technical support for the decision-making and work deployment of myopia prevention and control by governments, schools and medical institutions at all levels, as well as providing professional and personalized guidance for teenagers visual health. It is reported that by 2021, AIER has screened nearly 20 million people for myopia.



Moreover, AIER took the " 5P Model for Myopic Prevention" as the core, providing comprehensive solutions for youth myopia prevention and control, " 5P Model" which refers to prevention - "Prevention First", prediction - "Precise Prediction", process - "Standardized Process", platform-"Standardized Process" and parents- “Parents guardian”.
