The 2021 Graduation Ceremony of AIER School of Ophthalmology Central South University was grandly held



On July 29, the 2021 graduation ceremony of the AIER School of Ophthalmology, Central South University (referred to as “CSU”) was held in Changsha. A total of 36 doctoral and master students graduated successfully. This year is the sixth year that the AIER School of Ophthalmology, CSU has provided high talents to the society. 

Since 2016, the school has provided nearly 200 high-end professionals in ophthalmology to the industry.

We believe 2021 is an unusual year. It is the intersection of the two centenary and the first year of “ The Fourteenth Five-Year Plan ”. On a new starting point of the party and the country, this marked the start of a new journey of AIER in high-quality development. All in all, the development can not be separated from the training talents, especially the elite one.

“At present, the myopia population in China has exceeded 600 million, and there are over 32 million patients who has diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness. Hundreds of millions of people are suffering from eye diseases as well. In contrast to that, the number of Chinese ophthalmologists is only more than 40,000. The original intention and purpose of establishing the AIER School of Ophthalmology, CSU is to cultivate more outstanding ophthalmology talents for China, as well as meeting people's demand for visual health, carry out the Healthy China initiative. Prof. Shibo Tang, Dean of AIER School of Ophthalmology, CSU, advised and urged graduates patiently : “Growing up as a doctor is never easy. You guys have to put in more efforts! To be a good doctor, please keep in mind this six elements, knowledge, insight, courage, love, patience, and be cautious."

As a representative of all the tutors, Associate Prof. Qiongyan Tang sent blessings to the graduates: "Watching students rely on the college as a platform to get the opportunity to study at the world's leading universities, publish articles in internationally renowned journals, and stand on the stage of major academic forums at home and abroad, I am truly happy for you all. To persist in efforts without losing the aim will finally result in success, I sincerely hope that you guys will keep work on ophthalmology industry as you love, a job worthy of lifetime effort!”

From young students to the next level as the scientific research

main force, the graduates of AIER School of Ophthalmology, CSU have received an remarkable academic transcript: in terms of academic research, postgraduate research literacy and ability have been significantly improved, with nearly 40% of the master's degree students have published articles in Science Citation Index (referred to as “SCI”) journals or Chinese Science Citation Database journals. Among them, doctor representative Danmin Cao has published 8 high-quality SCI papers since enrollment, with a thesis in a well-known journal 《Ophthalmology》. 

At present, the impact factor of this journal is as high as 12.079, which is in the 1st district of the CAS, setting a record for doctoral students to publish papers since the establishment of the institution.

Academician Xiongli Yang, he shared with the graduates the stories of generations of predecessors in scientific research, In response to the call of the country, they gave up the bountiful material conditions abroad, overcome various difficulties and returned to the motherland, devoted themselves for the purposes for the benefit of the people. Science knows no borders, but scientists have a motherland.

Academician Yang has been working in the field of visual neuroscience for 57 years, and he will continue live with it. In conclusion, he encouraged all the students to stick to their ideals, remember their original intention, and strive to contribute to the progress of science and technology, national development and human society as well.

Lizhang Chen, Vice President of CSU, praised the excellent performance of the graduates, he also expressed his gratitude to all the leaders of AIER and the mentors of the school for their great efforts in cultivating graduate students. He hoped that the students would make good use of time, toward a bright future for all, devote their efforts to national eye health development!

In recent years, AIER completely get through the whole chain of talent cultivation and incubation system from undergraduate to postdoctoral. The results shows that the number of published papers and scientific research projects hit a new high. Following the strategic cooperation with CSU, Wuhan University and Hubei University of Science and Technology, AIER has also carried out strategic cooperation with Jinan University, Anhui Medical University, Tianjin University and other universities. Two parties also reached extensive consensus on training of the high quality talented persons, science and technology research and development innovation, medical personnel training, cooperation in building hospitals, etc. It have provided forceful talent guarantee and resource support for building a world and national ophthalmology center.

As a school specialized in cultivating elite ophthalmology talents in China, AIER School of Ophthalmology, CSU has accepted 74 doctoral students and 209 master students so far. Since 2016, AIER School of Ophthalmology has provided nearly 200 middle and high-end ophthalmology professionals for the industry.
